The Spirent Gemini 1022HS is a dual terminal emulator designed for testing and evaluating modems and modem communication links. It functions as a data analyzer and offers various features to facilitate accurate assessments. The emulator operates at a maximum internal clock rate of 128 kbps and supports high-speed Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) as well as asynchronous-only data compression testing. The software of the Gemini 1022HS is stored on EPROMs within the unit, enabling system upgrades through replacement. This emulator provides two sets of terminal parameters: one for call setup mode and another for test mode. This allows users to seamlessly transition from asynchronous call setup to synchronous BERT testing without the need to reconfigure terminal parameters.
One of the Gemini 1022HS feature’s is its BERT tests, which are employed to evaluate the performance of end-to-end data communications links in steady-state conditions. Each Gemini test interface (A and B) comprises a data transmitter and a data receiver. The transmitters transmit a selected test pattern, while the receivers compare the received data with the selected pattern and report any errors. Additionally, the receivers monitor the average data reception rate during the test and provide throughput results. The Gemini 1022HS features two types of BERT tests: Polls tests and Multi-point Polling. Polls tests repeatedly transmit a poll message with interpoll delays, where no response is expected or required. The receiver analyzes each poll message and discards it after evaluation. On the other hand, Multi-point Polling tests involve responding to each poll message, allowing for the measurement of response times.
The Gemini 1022HS can store and execute call setup instructions for virtually any modem, accommodating various data formats such as asynchronous, synchronous, and HDLC protocols. Characters can be encoded in ASCII or EBCDIC. Furthermore, this emulator is capable of monitoring and displaying the data flow between modems, providing comprehensive testing capabilities without the need for additional terminals, protocol analyzers, or switching equipment typically required in modem test setups. An additional advantage of the Gemini 1022HS is its ability to act as the GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) controller in an automatic test system. Commands are transmitted to the emulator via the RS-232 remote control port, allowing the emulator to control the rest of the test station through GPIB. Consequently, a standard PC can function as a GPIB controller without the need for additional GPIB control hardware when utilizing the emulator.
